‘Kingo’ ads electrify Product Design jury

The winner of the Product Design Grand Prix for 2018 is ‘Kingo’, a pioneering technology that has the potential to transform the lives of billions of people around the world with no access to energy. It was entered by Ogilvy Colombia, Ogilvy Guatemala and Kingo Energy.

The Kingo concept addresses the fact that 1.3 billion people around the world have no access to energy – ie no light, no TV, no fridge. They have created an off-grid solar energy solution that enables people to buy the amount of energy they need to perform basic household tasks. Perhaps surprisingly, this solution actually saves them money — with the monthly cost of Kingo solar energy coming in at half the price of candles.

Product Design jury president Asif Khan, an architect at Asif Kahn Ltd, said “this Grand Prix brought together all our principles. It’s a guiding light of design that will connect communities and enhance social mobility. I hope it’s the kind of entry we’ll look back and remember in 10 or 20 years.”

The jury came up with one Gold, five Silver and six Bronze Lions. The Gold went to Adidas Amsterdam for Futurecraft 4D.
