Aeronaut VR lands Digital Craft award

The winner of the Digital Craft Grand Prix for 2018 is a VR experience built around William Patrick Corgan’s recent music video for his single Aeronaut.

Entered by Isobar and Viacom New York, the winning entry sees Corgan’s three-and-a-half-minute performance of Aeronaut captured in volumetric video at Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Capture Studios, with the Unity creation engine and Google Tilt Brush used to create a surreal world around him.

Jury president Jean Lin, global CEO of Isobar, said the jury agreed that the winner “set the standard” for digital craft entries in the future. “It gave us an unparalleled feeling of technology enabling an idea in an intuitive and almost invisible way. It fit our brief, which was to reward technical artistry that was connected to the soul of the brand story.”

Lin said the digital craft category was “challenging to judge because it has evolved so fast in the last few years. Almost everything these days can be related back to the digital craft process in some way — so we are comparing such a diverse range of skillsets. What we really wanted was to select work that would inspire clients and agencies to be braver.”

Only three entries received Gold Lions, underlining the high bar set by the digital craft jury. Two came from the US and one from Brazil. The latter was a campaign for Forbes Brasil, created by Ogilvy Brasil.
